Contemporary green half calf with raised bands, gilt titles to red and brown labels, and elaborate gilt decoration to spine. Leather-grained green cloth over boards; all edges and endpapers marbled. Bound without the frontispiece. A little spotting to blank and endpapers, but otherwise an exceptionally crisp, clean copy. Tobacco scented. Moderate wear and bumping to binding; spine heavily toned with a few nicks. Very good. Evans' second novel, first published in 1860 under her pseudonym George Eliot. Item #57789
