Contemporary tan full polished calf with gilt titles to contrasting brown and green labels, and very elaborate gilt tooling, to spines. All edges and endpapers marbled. Library bookplate to each front pastedown. A library barcode and a red bookseller's label additionally to front pastedown of volume I. Red stamp showing a dog to each title page. Library stamps and serial numbers to verso of each title page. Further stamp to first and last leaf of text in each volume. Some light spotting to first and final leaves in each volume, otherwise quite crisp and clean. Heavy spotting to just one gathering in volume I. Bindings lightly rubbed, with a few marks, and bumping to corners. Heavy black library stamp to base of each spine. Tail of lower joint to volume III just starting. Hallam's first published work of history, consisting of nine sections, each focusing on different regions or themes of the European Middle Ages. First published in 1818. Item #57583
