"A book worth reading is worth buying."
— John Ruskin

New York, NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1879. [Exploration] FIRST US EDITION. Octavo (23 x 17cm), pp.xx, 432 [6]. Heavily illustrated with numerous engravings, including a frontispiece and vignette title page. Publisher's emerald green cloth with gilt titles and black decoration to spine and upper. Repair to split lower hinge. Edges toned. Light rubbing to board edges and a little bumping to corners. Near fine. Part one of three in 'The Exploration of the World,' chronicling all the major exploratory voyages ever made — so nothing overly ambitious. As usual M. Verne is not kidding, anyone of any nationality, race or creed who has ever said 'Hmmm, I wonder what's over there?' is in this book, accompanied by a map or two and enough illustrations to wallpaper a medium sized steam powered elephant. A fantastic book, the kind of thing you should read under the covers with a torch. Item #57096
