Folio (41 x 28cm), each part having a letter-press text of six leaves, including a half-tone photographic portrait of the illustrator tipped in as a frontispiece, as well as six mounted half-tone illustrated plates (some in colour) showing progressive stages in the development of a drawing by the illustrator. Each part contained within a grey card portfolio, bound with thick string. Black titles to upper of each portfolio. Each portfolio with moderate general rubbing and chipping to cover edges, as well as spotting to text leaves and a white chalk or crayon mark to upper stating 'XPK 66.' Heavy wear and splashing to front cover of part 16 (Bateman); water damage also to inner margin of text. Some lighter scratching to front cover of part 14 (Sullivan). Spine of part 7 (Heath-Robinson) almost completely split, with heavy water and mould staining and a tape burn to upper. Staining and splitting also to text, and heavy mould damage to rear cover bleeding through onto plates. Lighter water and mould staining to spine of part 4 (Rountree), not affecting contents. Water and mould staining to spine of part 15 (Salmon), with some splitting, and string lost. Mould staining to spine of parts 5 (Shepperson), 8 (F. Reynolds), 9 (Cuneo), 6 (Thomas), 1 (Wood), 20 (Partridge), and 18 (Hatherell), most with some minor intrusion onto the text.. Including parts 1; 2; 4; 5; 6; 7; 8; 9; 11; 12; 13; 14; 15; 16; and 20, each containing an account of particular illustrator's life and work, together with mounted half-tone reproductions loosely inserted in a portfolio illustrating six stages in the development of a drawing.
