London: Hodder & Stoughton, no date [1913]. [Children's Illustrated] FIRST EDITION. Quarto (32 x 26cm), pp.164. With 24 mounted colour plates, including a frontispiece, each with a captioned tissue guard. Re-bound later in the twentieth century in tan quarter cloth with grey paper over boards and green titles to plain paper labels on spine and upper. With the original endpapers, repaired to hinges. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Repairs to chipped and torn endpapers. Heavily browned to edges and margins, otherwise clean internally. Spine label toned and lightly chipped. Very good. A novel collection of Fairy Tales proposed by the illustrator Kay Nielson, who wanted to illustrate fanciful tales from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but found little obvious material from the latter period. The novelist and critic Quiller-Couch was therefore recruited to assemble this interesting mix of stories, drawn from several different traditions. Inevitably, powdered wigs and beauty spots abound in the illustrations for titles including 'Minon-Minette', 'The Man Who Never Laughed', and 'The Czarina's Violet'. Item #56958
