Derby: Henry Mozley, 1826. [Greek and Roman History] FINE CONTEMPORARY BINDING, two volumes bound as one. Octavo (22 x 14cm), pp.[8] 382; pp.viii; 432 [4]. With a folding map as a frontispiece to each title. Contemporary full marbled calf with gilt titles to black label, and extensive gilt decoration to spine. All edges and endpapers marbled. Black ink ownership to first blank. Heavy spotting, especially to maps and preliminaries. Edges very faded. Moderate wear to binding, except lower corner of the the upper board, which has seen some extremely heavy abrasion. Very good. Goldsmith's Roman History first appeared in 1769, while his Grecian History to the death of Alexander the Great was first published in 1774. Both were essentially school textbook histories, with the History of Greece acquiring additional material by other authors on the later history of the Greeks down to 1453 in subsequent decades, probably following Gibbon's decision to including this period in his larger work.
