With 40 engraved plates by Gajassi, including a frontispiece portrait of the author. All text in Italian, printed in two columns. Contemporary full parchment, with gilt titles to a replacement black label, and gilt decoration to spine. Black ink gift inscription to flyleaf, dated 1853. Spotting throughout, including to plates. Some loss to margin of p.165/66. Spotting, toning and a little rubbing to binding; lower board slightly bowed. Very good. The author's best-known work, first published between 1792 and 1804, consisting of a series of speeches given by illustrious Romans about their civilisation. Gajassi produced these illustrations at the age of 23, somewhat in the style of John Flaxman (1755-1826). Item #56783
