New York, NY: H.M. Caldwell Company, no date [circa 1896]. [Strange Tales] PIRATE EDITION. Octavo (17 x 11cm), pp. 206. With two illustrated plates, a portrait frontispiece of the author, and decorative title page. Publisher's generous green quarter cloth with silver titles and decoration to spine and flower-patterned paper over boards. Black gift inscription to fly-leaf dated 1896. Moderate browning throughout, on brittle paper as per most pirate copies, with some splitting to hinges. Quite heavy wear to boards; corners bumped. Very good. Doyle's second novel, first published in 1888, following the legendary debut 'A Study In Scarlet' (1887). A rather dark and sinister 'psychic' adventure and a precursor to the author's numerous supernatural tales. Item #56696
