With fine colour illustrations by the author, printed from the original wood blocks by Edmund Evans, to every page. Publisher's illustrated paper-covered boards with green cloth spine and green endpapers. Black ink gift inscription dated 1901 to flyleaf. Spotting throughout - quite heavily to preliminaries. Slightly shaken. Heavy rubbing to board edges. Very good. The author's debut illustrated children's book, first published in 1879. Frederick Warne purchased the rights to print a number of Routledge's most popular children's books in 1900, including this one. Item #56649
