London: John Russell Smith, 1844. [Kent] FIRST EDITION, SUBSCRIBER'S COPY WITH MLS. Octavo (24 x 16cm), pp.xxvi; [1]; 478; [2]. Modern russet cloth, gilt titles to a red calf label to spine, the binding done by Canterbury Bookbinders. Portrait frontispiece and hand-coloured engraved title page plus fourteen further plates (some bound out of place), two of which are coloured. Textblock generally clean with just some light toning and spotting to preliminaries and around plates. Some marking to the bottom edge. Cloth lightly marked. Uncommon. Very good. An interesting copy with a manuscript letter from Dunkin to the Rev. Dr. John Ingram, the president of Trinity College Oxford, thanking him for his subscription to the publication when it was announced and recording his pleasure in forwarding a copy on completion. Ingram was himself an antiquarian and was the Rawlinson Professor of Anglo-Saxon between 1803-1808. There is also a later gift inscription from Ingram passing on the book. Item #55246
