Mazzaroth; or, the Constellations. [and] Mizraim; or, Astronomy of Egypt. Frances ROLLESTON.

Mazzaroth; or, the Constellations. [and] Mizraim; or, Astronomy of Egypt.

London: Rivingtons, 1862-1865. [Astrology] FIRST EDITION, complete in four parts, as well as 'Mizraim.' Octavo (25 x 16cm), pp.[4] 24; pp.iv; 136; pp.[4] 32; pp.[4] 19 [1]; pp.[2] 29 [1]. With a folding Planisphere of Dendera. Original grey cloth with gilt titles to spine; yellow endpapers, binder's ticket to rear pastedown. Black ink gift inscription dated Christmas 1870 to front flyleaf. Light spotting to preliminaries. Ten lines of black ink notes in a contemporary hand to recto of rear flyleaf concerning Babylonian astrology. Folding planisphere with a large tear. Spine and board edges sunned; some light external wear. Very good. As well as completing a full fifty years of research for this book on the origins of the symbology of the constellations, Rolleston was also closely associated with the 'Clapham Saints' social justice movement led by Henry Thornton and William Wilberforce. Her contributions included building and running the first English infant schools in London and Nottinghamshire, before moving to the Lake District in later life to complete her scholarly projects. Sadly she died while the final part of 'Mazzaroth' was being printed, preventing any final corrections from being made. Item #55136
