London: Published by Hodder and Stoughton for Boots Pure Drug Co., no date . [Children's classic] FIRST HUDSON ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Quarto (25 x 20cm), pp. 272. With twenty-one full-page colour illustrations and many more in-text or to margins. Elegantly hand-bound in dark blue quarter morocco over publisher's gilt-stamped pictorial cloth sides, spine tooled in gilt with raised bands, gilt titles on red morocco labels, top edge gilt. A clean copy, inside and out. Hudson illustrated just two carefully-chosen classic fantasy books, namely J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan and Wendy and Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures In Wonderland. Alice was printed in London in 1922, with Peter Pan following in 1930. Her illustrations, like Arthur Rackham's, were both in full colour or simpler silhouettes, and although very little is known of the artist, she was nevertheless a contemporary of Mable Lucy Atwell, Lucy Kemp Welsh and Virginia Sterrett during the golden age of Edwardian gift books. Her modest but exquisite output remains highly desirable today. Item #55118
