Publisher's navy cloth with gilt titles to spines and upper boards, with a silver illustration stamped to upper boards. Decorative Chelsea Public Library bookplate to front pastedown of each volume, with blind stamps to plates throughout. Large blind library stamp to upper board of each volume. White shelf-marks to spines; head of volume II pulled. Toned to spines, gilt faded; moderate rubbing to boards. A clean and complete ex-library copy. Good. A participant in Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition (1907-09), Mawson went on to lead his own expedition from his native Australia to an area of the Antarctic previously unexplored, departing in December 1911. At the end of 1912 disaster struck when one member of his three-man sub-team fell into a crevasse with most of their sled dogs and supplies. Mawson and Xavier Mertz began the 480km trek back to base, but Mertz fell victim to vitamin A poisoning from the dog's livers they were forced to eat, and died before they reached their goal.
