London: Chapman and Hall, 1839. [Classic fiction] BOUND FROM PARTS; early issue text, mixed state plates. Octavo (22 x 15cm), pp.xvi; 624. Contemporary black half calf over marbled paper boards, red title label to spine, all edges speckled. Illustrated with author portrait frontispiece and thirty-nine plates by Phiz and Maclise. Binding is tight and presentable, corners bumped, boards somewhat worn. Neat ink ownership inscription to front endpaper and to title-page, spotting to preliminaries and more heavily to plates. Very Good. This copy does not have the point "visiter" for "sister" on p.123 line 17, but it does have "latter" for "letter" on p.160, 6 lines up. Some of the plates are numbered duplicates as noted in Hatton and Cleaver, and the first four plates have the imprint of Chapman and Hall which indicate they come from the 'earliest issues of the monthly parts'. (Hatton and Cleaver, p.134). Item #54110
