With a total of 25 engraved plates, including a frontispiece to each volume. Contemporary mottled calf boards, recently rebacked in matching calf with raised bands and gilt titles to spines. Occasional light spotting; a clean example overall. Quite heavy wear to boards. Very good. First published as 'Histoire du ciel' in 1739, the intention of this book was to collect and rationalise the whole religious history of Europe and the Near East in relation to the heavenly bodies, beginning with the naming of the Zodiac, and focusing particularly on the teachings of the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Subjects include Divination, Alchemy, as well as the theories of Aristotle, Descartes, Newton, and of course Moses. By the author better known for the Natural History classic, 'Spectacle de la Nature' (1732-1742). Item #53862
