Hafniae [Copenhagen]: Typis Officinae Schultzianae, edidit Societas Regia Antiquariorum Septentrionalium [the Royal Society for Norse Antiquities / Det Kongelige Nordiske Oldskriftselskab], 1837. [Norse History] FIRST EDITION. Quarto (34 x 28cm), pp.xl; 479 . With eight manuscript facsimile plates and 10 further plates at rear, including four maps. Recently re-backed using the original tan calf boards, with the original matching calf spine laid on. Raised bands with gilt titles and decoration. All edges and endpapers marbled. Some spotting, especially around plates - generally a crisp, clean copy. Original calf quite heavily scratched and bumped, now restored to a respectable and robust condition. Very good. Largely a parallel text in Danish and Latin, but also with a short abstract and a series of letters concerning Rhode Island in English, as well as the original Old Norse alongside Danish and Latin translations. Rafn became convinced that the old tales of Vineland from the Middle Ages were genuine historical texts rather than legends, and published here a collection of relevant sources including 'Tales of Erik the Red and Greenland' and 'The Saga of Thorfinn Karlsefni.'.
