Elegantly bound by Mudie in scarlet half calf over marbled sides, morocco title-piece to spine, gilt rope decoration over raised bands, blue endpapers, edges speckled red. Armorial bookplates of Henry Bois. Exceptionally clean within; bindings very lightly worn/aged. A lovely set. Fine. Vizetelly first pirated the 1886 Gottsberger/Harpers edition (translated from the second French edition 1884 by Bell) of 'War and Peace' in the autumn of that year. The second and third edition appeared in 1887 and the fourth followed in 1888. According to Bloomsbury Auctions, who sold a mixed edition set in 2014, first editions are "are incredibly scarce", with no copies appearing in auction records, and only one copy showing in library searches worldwide (BL).
