BASILIKA. The Workes [works] of King Charles the Martyr: with a Collection of Declarations, Treaties, And other Papers Concerning the Differences Betwixt His Said Majesty and His Two Houses of Parliament.

London: Printed by James Flesher for R. Royston, 1662. [English History] FIRST EDITION. Two volumes bound as one. Folio (35 x 24cm), pp.[12] 118; [10] 458 [2]; 733 [7]. Complete with the frontispiece, engraved title page, and three further double-page-spread engraved plates. Also with the title page and preliminaries to the second volume, misbound preceding the second part of volume I. Collation: A6; a-f6; g-i4; k-q2; A4; B-2P6; 2Q-2R4; B-3Q6; R4. One leaf (q3 from volume I) following the half-title to 'Eikon Basilike' (q2) seems to be missing, though there does not seem to be any text missing, and it does not interfere with the pagination. Recently re-backed, incorporating the original dark calf boards, and the original leather laid on the spine, some repairs to corner and board edges. Gilt titles to a new red calf label on spine; repairs to corners. A black ink note in an old hand to the front pastedown: 'This Book was presented by | K. Charles 2d with his own hand | at Chatham to Sir Phineas Pett Commissioner | of the Dock Yard there — in | the year 1660.' Below part of a nineteenth century MS. letter is tipped in with a hinge, asking for help identifying the book and its provenance. Also a modern ownership in blue ink. Significant repairs to edges of frontispiece. A minor slash to a6, volume I. A damp stain along the lower margin begins to appear around k6 of volume I, continuing intermittently to end. A single worm hole begins at p.605 of volume II, continuing to end. Heavily worn boards and spine restored to a robust, usable condition. Very good. Featuring five spectacular copper engravings by three different engravers, this is a complete collection of writings by and about Charles I, including a 'Life'; his famous disputed work 'Eikon Basilike'; Parliamentary speeches; papers concerning Church governance; prayers; as well as letters and treaties associated with the end of the Civil War and his imprisonment.
