New York, NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927. [Modern Literature] FIRST EDITION, with a complete but ailing '3' to p.3. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.; 232; . With two of the original yellow endpapers, as well as the original black cloth upper cover and spine, bound in at rear. Recent full black morocco with gilt titles and decoration to spine, and a gilt signature stamped to upper board. Marbled endpapers; fore-edge untrimmed. Lightly browned, as expected. Very good. Grissom notes five printings in 1927 which are very difficult to tell apart. It is generally accepted that the later printings have a broken '3' on p.3. Many of the tales collected here appear in book form for the first time, following initial publication in various periodicals; Hemingway is remembered for his novels, but it was the short stories that first attracted notice.
