Quarto (28 x 23cm), pp.viii [2] 344; xlvi; vi; pp.x; 268; xxv [5]. With 30 lithographic plates to volume I, some folding, after drawings by F. Pollard, including a frontispiece, and a number of in-text wood engravings, as well as two maps. Ten copper engravings after drawings by G. Baxter to volume II, two being inserted into volume I as per binding instructions. More in-text wood engravings, and a number of genealogical tables, some folding. The contents page and the folding map to volume I are modern facsimiles; all other plates are original. Recent brown half calf with raised bands, gilt titles to spine and marbled paper over boards, booksellers ticket to rear pastedown. Deep blue endpapers. Black ink initials of Bishop Gilbert to blue inner flyleaf, dated December 1846. A second blue ink ownership below. Two late nineteenth century inscriptions to verso of flyleaf giving biographical information about Bishop Gilbert. Pencil notes to verso of inner flyleaf. Folding frontispiece to volume I mis-folded in places with some repairs. Title page of volume I and entirety of volume II printed on lower quality paper, resulting in some browning. Occasional spotting around plates elsewhere. Very occasional pencil notes to margins and plates. Very good, but for the the missing title page and folding map. Item #53168
