Funeral in Berlin. Secret File No.3. Len DEIGHTON, born 1929.

Funeral in Berlin. Secret File No.3.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1964. [Cold War thriller] UNCORRECTED PROOF COPY in oversized PROOF-ONLY dust-wrapper designed by Raymond Hawkey, priced at 18s. Octavo (20 x 13cm), pp.320. Publisher's lime-green softcovers in jacket with bold 'PROOF ONLY' text to rear flap with provisional publication date printed below. Shows some expected handling, unsupported areas of the jacket creased and frayed, some tape strips to reverse side; overall a very good copy of an uncommon proof. All of Deighton's Cape-published proofs are uncommon in their proof jackets, the earlier titles especially so. This advance jacket features significant differences to the published version, most notably the gothic black letter typeface for the title to both upper panel and spine, and the 'Secret File No 3' text position, which was too cluttered here and amended accordingly. Item #53116

Book Collector No.287 (pp.32-62) 'The Sixties'. Milward-Oliver; Len Deighton Annotated Bibliography p.29.
