London: Jonathan Cape, 1938. [History] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (24 x 17cm), pp.896. Illustrated with sixteen plates, and four maps, two folding. Usual corrected state of text. Publisher's brown buckram in original dust-wrapper. Illustrated with photos and drawings, complete with folding maps. Owner name to flyleaf, jacket a little dusty and sunned to spine, joints rubbed, frayed at tips. Very good. E.M. Forster first attempted editing the letters for publication, but gave up the effort. It fell to Garnett to compile this 1938 edition, which is the major collection, rivalled and supplanted only by 'Home Letters of T.E. Lawrence and his Brothers', (1954). Two words were corrected during the run of the first impression and thus it appears in two states. Item #52525
