Red half morocco over marbled boards, raised bands and gilt decoration to spine, marbled endpapers and edges. Title page in printed in red and black, pictorial frontispiece, 4 in-text illustrations. Light spotting to first few pages, bookplate to pastedown, gift inscription to first blank, textblock lightly toned with some spotting to preliminaries. Binding lightly rubbed to extremities. Very good. The legends were first printed on a regular basis in the Bentley's Miscellany magazine and New Monthly magazine, and first published as a book in 1840. The book is a collection of poetry, ghost stories and legends that are mostly parodies or deliberately humorous. Item #51837
