The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. Charles DICKENS.

The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1837. [English Literature] FIRST EDITION, mixed issue with the following earlier points; p.9 marginal note appears (suppressed in later issues); p.25 and 27 bear the signature mark "E"; "S.Veller" for "S.Weller" at p. 342, line 5; p.282 and p.299 erroneously noting "Chapters XXVIII"; p.375 header reads "PICWKICK". The other points are corrected and the engraved title vignette is in the second state, with "Tony Weller" on the signboard, the plates with the Chapman and Hall imprint. Octavo (24 x 15cm), pp.xiv; [1, directions]; [1, errata]; 609; [1, blank]. With forty-three illustrations including frontispiece and vignette title-page. Publisher's original purple brown fine-diaper cloth [Smith, 3; the primary binding], lettered in gilt to spine, ruled in blind to spine and upper, coated yellow endpapers, edges untrimmed. Text leaves very clean; plates with some expected spotting but not heavy. Cloth sunned to spine and extremities, neatly recased with repairs to joints and spine ends, inside joints strengthened. Overall an attractive and inexpensive copy in the cloth binding. Item #50943
