With 130 wood engraved illustrations. Contemporary tan full calf prize binding by MACLEHOSE, with the arms of Glasgow University stamped in gilt to upper boards and head of spines. Gilt titles to contrasting red and green labels to spines; further gilt to spines; all edges and endpapers marbled. Glasgow University prize plate dated 1894 to front pastedown. Blue ink address and price from 1982 to verso of each front free endpaper. Significant amateur tape repairs to pp.311-14 of volume II. Binding lightly rubbed to extremities, more so to joints and spines, heads of spines a little pulled. Very good but for the tape repairs. Fair. Item #50686
