London: Macmillan and Co., 1894-5. Two volumes, both FIRST EDITIONS. Octavo (19 x 13cm). With illustrations by John Lockwood Kipling. Publisher's blue cloth, gilt, with coated black endpapers, all edges gilt. A very good pair with some expected shelfwear and rubbing, a spotting within, discreet ink name to each volume, inner paper joints cracked, some marking/soiling to covers. Shows well. The 'Jungle Books' is a collection of short stories, the best-known being the three tales revolving around the adventures of the abandoned 'man cub' Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. The most famous of the other stories are probably 'Rikki-Tikki-Tavi', the story of a heroic mongoose, and 'Toomai of the Elephants', the tale of a young elephant-handler. Item #50641
