London: Printed for T. Cadell, 1793. [Military History] FIRST EDITION. In two volumes. Octavo (22 x 14cm), pp.[2] clxiv; 214; [6]; pp.[2]; vi; 215-516; [4]. With three folding maps to volume II. Contemporary brown calf with gilt titles to spine and armorial device stamped to all boards. All edges yellow; marbled endpapers. Clean textblocks, some marks to edges. Neat repairs to joints, bindings rubbed to spines and board edges, some chipping to the tips of the spines. Very good. Lindsay fought as a grenadier officer during the American War of Independence in the 1770's and 80's, seeing action at both St Lucia and Gibraltar. At the close of hostilities he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel of his regiment, but committed suicide during his defence of the Island of Martinique in March 1795. These two volumes of military history consist chiefly of a series of extracts translated from von Tempelhoff's 'Geschichte des Siebenjährigen Krieges', alongside a translation of a treatise on winter posts based on the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778. Lindsay introduces the book with a detailed summary of the course of the Seven Years War from the British perspective, engaging with General Lloyd's history, and closes with his own eye-witness accounts of fighting at St Lucia and Gibraltar during the American War of Independence. A rare book not seen at auction this past century. Item #50337
