One leaf of text faces each engraving, to be bound according to taste. In this case, some leaves of text do not have facing plates. Later purple leather-grain-effect cloth with gilt titles to spines. All edges gilt. Black ink gift inscription to J. W. Jackson to front free pastedown of each volume, dated 1893. Accompanying monogram bookplates. Some spotting, and some browning in places; some tissue guards missing. Preliminaries quite well-thumbed. 30 plates missing in total. Binding rubbed to extremities, spines sunned. Fair. The first volume of this series was published by Charles Tilt in 1838, with a second appearing with a different publisher and a different author in 1842. Item #50166
