London: Constable, 1894. [Supernatural Fiction]. FIRST EDITION, bibliographer's copy. Small octavo (16 x 9cm), pp.125. Ribbed blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper, gilt dragon design to upper. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Minor toning to edges, cloth a little worn at extremities, bookplate 'Christopher Clark Geest', pencil note to flyleaf stating that this copy from the collection of J.M Gibson, bibliographer of Doyle, sold at California Book Auction, April 1987 (sale 248). Doyle's own unique attempt at a vampire novel, albeit with his vampire a spirit sucking entity rather than the more conventional bloodsucker. The parallels with the vampire legend were made even more explicit in 1897 when Constable published 'Dracula', and immediately re-issued 'The Parasite' in matching yellow cloth with red titles.
