The Thirty-Nine [39] Steps, John BUCHAN, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir.

The Thirty-Nine [39] Steps,

London, William Blackwood and Sons, 1915. [Espionage classic]. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.253; [2], adverts. Elegantly hand-bound in full blue oasis, spine gilt-lettered in six compartments with raised bands, gilt titles to upper cover, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. A little of the usual edge toning to the cheap wartime paper but better than most, exterior unmarked. A near fine copy in an attractive recent leather binding. The famous novel which introduced spy-catcher Richard Hannay. Basis for several movie adaptations; the most notable being the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock, which is considered one of the legendary director's greatest pictures. Buchan's adventurer was one of the fore-runners to James Bond; [author Ian Fleming] "was certainly influenced by no-nonsense British fictional characters such as Richard Hannay" [Gilbert, p.616]. Item #49608
