London: Constable, 1894. [Supernatural Fiction]. FIRST EDITION, small octavo (16 x 9cm), pp.125. Publisher's blue-green paper wraps titled and decorated in dark green. A remarkable survival. Published simultaneously with the cloth bound copy but in our experience far scarcer. Some light edgewear, lightly handled, reading creases/paper cracks to spine. A very good copy of a fragile item, issued simultaneously in hardcovers, which survive far better. Doyle's own unique attempt at a vampire novel, albeit with his vampire a spirit sucking entity rather than the more conventional bloodsucker. The parallels with the vampire legend were made even more explicit in 1897 when Constable published 'Dracula', and immediately re-issued 'The Parasite' in matching yellow cloth with red titles.
