In contemporary brown calf boards with gilt ruling, re-backed in the later 20th century. Raised bands and gilt titles to spine. Slight lean. Armorial bookplate of John William Pease to front pastedown. Very light worming to binding, text block unaffected. Browning around some plates. Good overall. An unique, personalised copy of the Naturalist's eclectic observations on his national Capital, which he introduces as 'the first city in the universe.'
