With all 12 engravings called for in the binder's instructions, including a frontispiece of Sir Henry Lee. Also with 21 extra illustrations, including 19 listed by hand in black ink to a 'Memorandum', to prelims, as well as an additional frontispiece engraving of a bust of Charles I and a large folding panorama of London and Westminster in the Reign of Elizabeth, 1563. In contemporary brown calf boards with gilt ruling, re-backed in the later 20th century. Raised bands and gilt titles to spine. Slight lean. Armorial bookplate of John William Pease to front pastedown. Very light worming to binding, text block unaffected. Browning around some plates. Good overall. An unique, personalised copy of the Naturalist's eclectic observations on his national Capital, which he introduces as 'the first city in the universe.' Extra illustrations added in two distinct phases, as shown in the memorandum, both in the early 1790's. Item #49056
