London: Chapman and Hall, 1936. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.237. In publisher's patterned red and black cloth, gilt titles to spine, internal cloth strips along the gutters as originally issued. Text block with only light spotting to first and final leaves and edges. Owner name 'John B. O'Brien' to fly. Binding lightly rubbed to extremities, spine a shade sunned. Very good indeed. The title novella, set in a mental asylum, was the basis for the acclaimed BBC drama starring Andrew Sachs and Prunella Scales; a witty and well-constructed programme, with every word of the original short story being used, which combined the humour of PG Wodehouse with the darkness of an Edgar Allen Poe.
