London: George Newnes, 1902. FIRST EDITION. Octavo (19 x 14cm), pp.359. With 16 illustrated plates by Paget. Bound in publisher's decorative red cloth, showing silhouette of the hound against a skyline in black and gilt to front board, gilt titles to spine. Internally clean and free from marks and spotting. Text-block is tight and sound, slightly cocked, one gathering standing slightly proud. Spine sunned, bumping to corners, spine ends bumped with a little fraying. Very good. Arguably Holmes' most charismatic case, and one which has consequently been adapted for stage and screen numerous times - and only about half of those times as a parody. Item #47394
