London: Hall and Virtue, 1861. VERY SCARCE collection of Lancashire poems. Octavo, pp.viii, 160. Bound in publisher's green textured cloth, with gilt titles to spine, and extra blind tooling to boards. Brown endpapers. Cloth in very good condition with some pale marks to boards. A little worn at endcaps, with a darkened spine. All corners bumped. Textblock mostly clean throughout, excepting some brown marks to lower edge of final 20 or so pages. Very good overall. Despite his rather humble background, Billington's commitment to education and self-improvement established him as a very popular poet and writer, and a respected teacher. "The Blackburn Poet" conveyed the everyday experiences of the Lancashire cotton mill workers, and provided astute social commentary on his own era. Item #47101
