London: C. Bathurst, 1766. FIRST THUS. Octavo. pp. xxiv, 226. In contemporary full brown calf with gilt titles to orange morocco label. Black ink inscription to front paste-down, otherwise crisp and clean internally. Joints split, boards still attached. Small white sticker with black ink numbers to top left of upper board. Near-fine in fair binding. Reverend Pye here produces a new English edition of the life of Cardinal Reginald Pole (1500-1558), the last Roman Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury. Thus-far it had only appeared in English as a translation of Cardinal Quirini's edition, in 1764. Pye claims to have produced his version using the original Italian of Beccadelli (1501-1572), who knew Pole personally. Item #46370
