Jazz 1955-1959. 61
Amsterdam: Fragment Uitgeverij, 1991. First Dutch Edition, having previously published in Japan. Square octavo, with 190 photographic plates. Bound in publisher's printed softcovers with striking pictorial jacket. A clean, fine copy, with a signature to half-title 'Joost Divend'. Ed van der Elsken was a prolific Dutch artist, photographer, and filmmaker, whose influence can be felt in the work of celebrated photographers of the late twentieth and early twenty first centuries, including that of Wolfgang Tillmans and Larry Clark. This collection of black and white photographs features legends such as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzie Gillespie and Duke Ellington, all mid-performance, and often in extreme close-up. It is an extraordinary record of Jazz history, by an extraordinary photographer. The accompanying text, which is in Dutch, is by J. Bernlef. Item #46261
