London: Routledge, Warne, and Routledge, 1864. Second Edition. Octavo, pp.[iv], 60. Bound in recent brown cloth, with gilt titles to spine, original upper bound in. Illustrated by Cruikshank with many in-text woodcut engravings. Binding shows no signs of rubbing. Internally clean, with some light marginal browning, neat ownership inscription to title page, no signs of foxing; original wrapper is chipped and browned. Renowned as one of the chief illustrators of his generation, illustrating many of Dickens' works, Cruikshank was also among the chief political satirists. In this work, however, he turns his satiric attentions on the phenomenon of spiritualism, particularly those practitioners of the table tapping variety. Excellent fun, illustrated to amuse, and with many learned references to Shakespeare. Item #43755
