Bound in full blue straight grained calf, with triple blind ruling to boards, Leamington College for Boys school crest in gilt to front board, raised bands and gilt titles to spine; all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Illustrated with maps and tables, several in colour including frontispiece. With prize bookplate and bookseller's ticket. Binding is rubbed to joints and corners, spine slightly sunned. Internally clean, apart from some foxing to prelims and the tissue guard of frontispiece Green was an able historian, and this, his first work, was also his most lasting contribution to the study of history. Though he later expanded it into a four volume work, this remains pithy, informative, and defined the popular understanding of English history in the late nineteenth century. With the bookplate of Leamington College, awarded to "Henry T. Powell" in 1884, to paste down.
