London: Macmillan and co., 1898. Prize Binding. Fifth Edition. Octavo. Bound in full blue calf, gilt ruled panelling to boards, with central gilt motif of the arms of Uppingham School to front board; raised bands, red title label and gilt decoraiton to spine; gilt dentelles, gilt decoration to board edges, marbled endpapers. Illustrated with five fold-out maps and six plans. Binding shows well, with rubbing to joints and spine ends, corners bumped, some small scratches to rear board, and spine somewhat faded. Internally clean and free from spotting. The first map of Northern and Central India has suffered some damage where it protrudes from text block, and additionally has a small tear at the gutter margin; otherwise maps and plans very clean, those which are dual-coloured retaining their vibrancy. Prize bookplate, honoris causa, "Keith Anderson", 1904. This is a revised edition of Holmes' first book, a history of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which is sometimes known as India's First War of Independence. Item #43290
