The Lives of Dr John Donne, Sir Henry Wotton, Mr Richard Hooker, Mr George Herbert, and Dr Robert Sanderson: To which are added the autographs of those eminent men, now first collected; an index, and illustrative notes.

London: John Major, 1825. First Major Edition. Octavo. Bound in contemporary black morocco, with blind panelling and corner motifs to boards, titles in gilt to spine; all edges gilt, interior gilt rulings, cream endpapers. Binding is rubbed to joints and extremities, with bumping to corners. Largely clean inside, with spotting to plates, which sometimes bleeds to surround leaves. Though his Lives has become a classic of biography, Walton is more famous for his Compleat Angler. Indeed, one theory suggests that he was led to his biographical project by angling, when he got to known Henry Wotton, accomplished diplomat and provost of Eton College. Item #43247
