London: Jonathan Cape. 1964. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE, BINDING A. Pp.256. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper over boards with silver titles to spine and Japanese characters in gilt to upper, bamboo patterned endpapers, in original pictorial dustwrapper by Richard Chopping. With 'First Published 1964' on the copyright page. Some edge-spotting else fine in a beautiful fine jacket. This copy features one of the earliest jackets, entirely untrimmed and with extra wide jacket flaps, printed on the heavier stock. A price label (possibly repriced for export) was present but has since dried and fallen away. Such jackets are considered FINAL PROOF STATE, used to check the look and spacing of text etc. before printing began in earnest. The subsequent jackets had slimmer flaps with an angled corner cut, and were printed on regular dust-jacket stock. A rare variant, housed in an attractive quarter leather box. Item #42774
