London: Sampson Low, Marston and Co., no date [circa 1910]. [Classic Literature] FINELY BOUND. Crown octavo, pp.517. Photogravure of the author as frontispiece, from a photograph by Fred Jenkins, with tissue guard. 'School Prize' binding of full dark blue calf, extra gilt with gilt crest of Trafalgar House Winchester to upper board, marbled edges and endpapers. Mathematics Prize certificate to pastedown. A little marking to covers; very good indeed. Perhaps the ultimate Victorian Romance, set in Devon in the period between the Restoration and the Monmouth Rebellion. As well the Romeo and Juliet style romance between the stolid farmer John Ridd and the Gypsy Princess Lorna, the novel also brilliantly dramatises the Great Frost of 1683 and the Bloody Assizes of Judge Jeffreys, and describes the landscape with an affection worthy of Hardy.
