London, Ward Lock and Co. 1935. FIRST EDITION, later state. Octavo. In the secondary binding of mid-green cloth, lettered in black, in original jacket repriced at 5/- and with publisher's book number overprinted to spine. The striking dust-wrapper depicts a burning city, a flask (presumably of said fluid, apparently the elixir of life no less) and the time honoured 'sinister bald man's disembodied head floating in the background in malignant fashion' motif that we never get tired of seeing. Some minor edgewear but overall clean, bright and attractive. Scarce. Ward Lock's practice with slow-selling titles of this period was to reissue the spare/unsold sheets in a cheaper binding (no gilt) and to clip and reduce the price on the jacket, which then had a series number added to the spine.
