"Books serve to show a man that those original thoughts of his aren't very new after all."
— Abraham Lincoln

London, Ward Lock. 1896. First edition. 8vo. 386pp + 6pp ads. Publisher's black cloth title in gilt to spine and decorated in white and red to front board. Light edgewear, bumping to head of spine, the book would be catalogued as near fine were it not for an unfortunate centimetre square chip of loss to the base of the spine. An extremely handsome copy with a single, albeit rather glaring defect. Internally clean and fresh. Inscribed by Fergus Hume to the front flyleaf: 'With Kindest Regards, Fergus Hume, 13 xi 96' An immensely prolific author, if never quite repeating the promise of Hansom Cab, inscribed Hume is very desirable.
