London: Hodder and Stoughton Ltd., 1925. FIRST ROBINSON ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Octavo. Beautiful detailed illustrations throughout by Charles Robinson, including title page and colour frontispiece. Publisher's light blue decorative cloth, titles and decoration in gilt to spine with added gilt and black illustration to front board; illustrated endpapers. Colourful pictorial dust-jacket. Binding bright. Slight fading to spine of dust jacket frayed to spine tips and corners, creased along extremities with a couple of small closed tears, a little marking to back panel. A lovely copy indeed. Ostensibly a typical fairytale, telling the story of a war between the kingdoms of Euralia and Barodia and the political shenanigans which take place in Euralia in the king's absence. The book is notable for it's believable and fallable characters such asa princess who is far from helpless; a prince who is pompous and vain; an enchantment which is almost entirely humorous; a villain who is not entirely villainous; a good king who isn't always good; an evil king who isn't always evil, and so on.
