The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, 1936. Octavo, pp. 456. Publisher's gilt-stamped green buckram. With a sepia map of the islands, colour frontispiece, and many illustrations throughout. A used copy with ownership stamps to the preliminary leaves, re-backed in grey cloth with new endpapers. Ownership stamps to the preliminary leaves, re-backed in grey cloth with new endpapers, some foxing and marginal notes throughout; a good copy. First edition, inscribed by the author to a fellow naturalist; "To my friend Jose A. Veiga from Jim Bond". Ian Fleming took the name for his famous spy from the ornithologist James Bond (1900-1989). Fleming was looking for a most plain, unsophisticated name for the character who became synonymous for flamboyance and style. He owned a copy of the 1947 re-issue of this title, and instantly decided upon the name after chancing upon it on his bookshelves. The first printing is scarce, signed copies exceedingly. Gilbert notes only other signed copy in his experience. This copy is from the significant Ian Fleming collection of Martin Schøyen (b.1940), with his bookplate. Schøyen's private collection of manuscripts, which span all cultures and all time periods, is one of the largest and most comprehensive of its kind. Item #156032
