Douglas Adams (11 March 1952 - 11 May 2001) was an English author, scriptwriter, essayist, humourist, satirist, and dramatist. He is best known for the celebrated The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which orginiated on radio in 1978. The book sold more than 15 million copies in his lifetime, and inspired many adaptations on stage, screen, and paper.Adams was known as an advocate for environmentalism and conservation, as a lover of fast cars, cameras, technological innovation (including a love of the Apple Mac). He was described as a "devout atheist".
