Ayn Rand | First Editions
1902 - 1982
Russian-born American novelist and philosopher. Her first novel, the semi-autobiographical
We the Living is set in Communist Russia, and focused on the struggle between the individual and the state. Adapted into a pair of Italian films, "Noi vivi" and "Addio, Kira", in 1942. Rediscovered in the 1960s, these films were later re-edited into a new version which was approved by Rand and re-released, posthumously as "We the Living" (1986). Rand achieved fame with her breakthrough novel
The Fountainhead (1943) and her magnum opus
Atlas Shrugged (1957) was her last work of fiction before concentrating her writings exclusively on philosophy, politics and cultural criticism.
