1775 - 1817

Jane Austen (16 December 1775 - 18 July 1817) was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, in the main set amongst the English upper classes have  earned her a place as arguably the most widely read writers in English literature. Without too much exagerration she can probably be described as one the first "realistic" novelist in English. Her stories contain a wealth of detail regarding the daily lives of her contemporaries, a departure from the melodramatic and rather purple fashion of previous popular novels. Her writing style is intensely rich and vivid, crowded with a wealth of the kind of vivid social detail that makes reading her work such an immersive experience.
